Let’s be honest: almost every Google Ads manager will agree that automated bidding isn’t just about setting a target, it’s mastering the algorithm.

You set a conservative 500% Target ROAS or a generous Target CPA. The algorithm hits a sweet spot, your targeting is dialled in, and you happily coast at a 700% ROAS for months, not touching a thing.

You’re beating your targets, so life is good. Right?

Enjoy it while it lasts, because on 17th August, Google is removing the safety net.

A major structural update is happening that changes how Smart Bidding handles the gap between “what you tell the platform you want” and “what the platform actually delivers”. If you’re sitting on accounts that are quietly outperforming their targets, you need to make some changes to the accounts now or prepare for a very uncomfortable client call in September.

Here is the unfiltered truth about what’s changing, why it’s happening, and how to fix your accounts before the deadline.

The Core Change: “Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say”

Historically, Smart Bidding treated your Target ROAS or CPA as a loose guideline rather than a hard boundary. If your daily budget was constrained or competition was low, the system would happily over-deliver on efficiency. Usually, that gap only closed when you tried to uncap your budget or scale the spend.

After 17th August, Google is flipping that logic on its head.

Google’s objective with this update is strict, literal alignment. They want the exact number you type into that settings box to be the exact performance level the system works to deliver.

The Big Risk: If you are currently hitting a 700% ROAS while your platform setting is sitting at 500%, the system will no longer let you coast on that extra efficiency. Instead, it will look at your 500% target and say, “Oh, they want more volume at a lower return”. It will actively start bidding on cheaper, less qualified leads to drive up volume until your actual performance drops down to match your 500% target.

In short: Your overperformance will vanish because the algorithm is doing exactly what you told it to do.

Why This Might Actually Be Good News

It’s easy to roll your eyes whenever Google announces a major automation shift, but if we look past the immediate panic, there is a genuine silver lining here.

Google’s pitch for this update is all about predictability.

If the system works the way they promise, it solves one of the biggest headaches in paid search: the scaling wobble. Historically, when a client said, “We have an extra £5k this month, open the taps”, PPC managers held their breath. Efficiency usually cratered.

Under the new logic, uncapping a budget shouldn’t cause a massive efficiency drop-off. Because the system is already optimised tightly to your exact target, scaling the budget should simply find more conversions at that exact mathematical threshold.

It makes forecasting cleaner, scaling more predictable, and business margins far more stable. But, and this is a massive but, it only works if your targets reflect reality before the switch happens.

The Loud Mouth Pre-17th August Housekeeping Guide

None of this is rocket science; it’s fundamental account hygiene. But dedicating an hour to your accounts this week will save you a world of defensive reporting.

Here is exactly how we are prepping our client accounts:

Step 1: Pull 60 Days of Data

Pull a full 60-day window per campaign to smooth out minor data anomalies, weekend fluctuations, or seasonal shifts. This will help spot campaigns flagged as “Limited by Budget,” which are most likely to cause performance issues once the update hits.

Step 2: Spot the Gaps

Create a quick spreadsheet mapping your Actual Delivered ROAS/CPA against the target typed into the campaign settings. Highlight any campaign where the actual performance is beating the target by more than 10-15%. Those are your red zones.

Step 3: Nudge, Don’t Leap

If you find a campaign sitting at a 700% actual ROAS with a 500% platform target, do not change the setting to 700% overnight. If you shock the algorithm with a massive jump, it will panic, throw the campaign back into a prolonged “Learning Mode”, and tank your volume.

The Bottom Line: Don’t Let the Machine Decide For You

Automated bidding is an incredibly powerful tool, but it is entirely literal. If you leave wide gaps between your actual business goals and the inputs you feed the platform, 17th August is going to be a rude awakening.

Take control of your account health now. Align your targets with your genuine performance, protect your client relationships, and fix the guardrails before Google fixes them for you.
